Sustainability Design
Biology and Society
We live in an era where ecological challenges and technological transformation profoundly shape our existence. The flows of energy, matter, and information form a vast, interconnected system in which human beings are inseparable from nature. At this turning point, sustainability is not only a necessity but also an opportunity to reimagine how design can mediate the relationship between people, materials, and living systems. It also calls for greater attention to human society, our values, our sense of care, and the ways we live together.Within this shared network, biodesign emerges as a way to rethink creation, shaping practices that are both innovative and responsive to the world.
βTo design for the future is to design with empathy, for the planet, for human society, and for all living systems.β
(Junqi)
Junqi Wang, a Melbourne based biodesigner. She specialises in the intersections of Biology, technology, and design. With a academic background spanning Bachelor of Design (University of Melbourne), Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Monash University), and Master of Management in Marketing (University of Melbourne), she integrates visual communication, biological research, and strategic thinking into her creative practice. Her current research aims to design and implement mycelium-based 3D printing systems that respond to environmental conditions and enable interactive user engagement. By combining sensor networks, feedback control algorithms, and multisensory interfaces, Junqi transforms living materials into dynamic, participatory media. This approach not only advances sustainable material innovation but also offers opportunities for education, emotional connection, and cross disciplinary collaboration.Driven by a vision to bridge scientific inquiry with artistic expression, Junqi is constantly seeking new creative pathways that cultivate sustainable awareness and inspire interaction between humans, technology, and living systems.
